🔍 Diagnostic Overview

- The Reality: Fungal pathogens are already deep inside the established leaf tissue. Mid-season topical sprays will not eliminate the existing spots.
- The Good News: At over 10 years old, your tree has a massive, robust root system. This infection is a seasonal setback and is highly unlikely to threaten the life of a mature tree.

1. Late Summer & Autumn (Right Now)
- The Ground Sweep: Keep the soil beneath the tree completely bare. Fungal spores overwinter on dead organic matter sitting on the ground.
- Rigorous Leaf Sanitation: Regularly rake up, bag, and discard all fallen leaves.
- Disposal Warning: Do not compost infected leaves. Household compost piles rarely reach temperatures high enough to kill fungal spores, meaning you could inadvertently re-infect your yard. Toss them in the municipal yard debris bin or trash.
- Deep Root Watering: During hot August and September dry streaks, give the tree a slow, deep soaking at ground level once every two weeks using a soaker hose. Avoid overhead sprinklers that wet the leaves.
2. Winter (January to February)
- The Pruning Window: Wait for a dry, clear winter day to prune.
- Maximize Light & Airflow: Selectively thin out heavy, mature branches, crossing limbs, and vertical water sprouts. Sunlight hitting the interior wood in July/August triggers the tree to form flower buds for the following year, while increased wind airflow dries spring leaves instantly.
- Sanitize Tools: Wipe your pruning shears down with isopropyl alcohol between cuts to avoid spreading pathogens around the healthy wood.
3. Early Spring (Typically Early to Mid-March)
- The "Bud Break" Milestone: Watch your tree closely as the weather begins to warm. Look for the exact moment the protective winter scales drop and the very first green leaf tips push out.
- First Preventative Spray: Spray the entire tree thoroughly with a food-safe liquid copper fungicide (e.g., Bonide Captain Jack's Copper Fungicide or Monterey Liqui-Cop). This creates a protective shield over the fresh leaf tissue, preventing airborne spores from taking root.
4. Mid-Spring (April through June)
- Weather-Based Protection: Our persistent spring rains will eventually wash away the copper shield. Re-apply the copper fungicide or switch to an organic neem oil spray every 10 to 14 days, specifically targeting dry windows right before a major rainstorm.
- When to Stop: Once our dry summer weather sets in (usually by late June), stop spraying entirely. Fungal spores cannot germinate on dry foliage.
🍏 The Fruit Production Puzzle
Because your tree did not flower this year, it redirected its energy into self-defense and vegetative growth. To bring back fruit production in future seasons, two issues must be resolved:
1. Internal Energy (Encouraging Blossoms)
- Canopy Thinning: Winter pruning ensures light reaches the interior wood, which stimulates fruit bud development for the following year.
- Hold the Fertilizer: Avoid applying high-nitrogen fertilizers. Excess nitrogen forces rapid, tender new leaf growth that is highly vulnerable to immediate fungal infection, rather than producing flower buds.
2. External Factors (The Pollination Gap)
Asian pears are not self-fertile. Even if your tree blooms beautifully next spring, the flowers will drop off without setting fruit unless they receive pollen from a different, compatible pear tree blooming at the exact same time.
- Option A (The Neighborhood Baseline): If you live in a dense Portland residential zone, a neighbor's pear tree within bee-flight distance (100 feet) may naturally cross-pollinate your tree if it blooms.
- Option B (The "Bouquet" Method): If your tree blooms but you have no neighbor trees, cut a few blossoming branches from a compatible pear tree elsewhere, place them in a bucket of water right beneath your tree, and let local bees do the work.
